• The programming competition organised by HP for the past 6 years is designed to promote interest in technology and computers among young people, particularly girls.
  • Registration is open for 3 weeks, from 20 January to 7 February.

This year, and for the first time in the history of HP, the HP CodeWars programming competition will be held virtually and simultaneously in the three main HP centres in Spain: Barcelona, Madrid and León. The objective of the programme is to promote STEM disciplines (sciences, technology, engineering and mathematics) among young people, adapting to the current situation by making the competition fully virtual to guarantee the safety of all participants.

This year’s event will be held on Saturday 6 March under the name HP CodeWars Spain Virtual Edition and will take place on a virtual platform proposed and managed by volunteers from the engineering teams at HP.

Over the course of three hours, the participants — students between the ages of 14 to 18 from secondary school, upper secondary school or vocational courses — will compete to demonstrate their expertise in programming languages like Java, Python 2 and 3, C or C++, solving around 30 different mathematical problems. The teams are made up of three students, accompanied by a teacher, and each school can register up to three separate teams. In order to encourage interest in engineering among girls, teams with female members will once again be prioritised in the registration process. Registration opens on 20 January for 3 weeks, closing on 7 February.

In contrast to previous events, since the programming competition cannot be held at HP facilities, as it always has been until now, and if pandemic conditions allow it, it is recommended that schools provide a space in their facilities to allow the students in each team to be together on the day of the competition. If this is not possible, the participants may connect to the competition from their own homes. At the end of the competition, there will be prizes for the three winning teams, as well as for the best under-16 team and the best mixed or all-female team.
